Scrap metal includes both ferrous metals (metals that contain iron, like steel and iron) and non-ferrous metals (metals that do not contain iron, like aluminium, copper, and brass). Scrap metal can be collected, processed, and reused to produce new products, helping to conserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact.
Ferrous Metals:
1. Steel: Rebar, beams, steel frames, and machinery parts.
2. Iron: Old pipes, radiators, and automotive parts.
Non-Ferrous Metals:
1. Aluminium: Beverage cans, window frames, and automotive parts.
2. Copper: Electrical wires, plumbing pipes, and roofing materials.
3. Brass: Plumbing fixtures, keys, and decorative items.
4. Lead: Car batteries, roofing materials, and pipes.
5. Zinc: Roof gutters, die-cast toys, and railings.
Other examples include:
• Stainless Steel: Kitchen appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, ovens and microwaves; cutlery, and medical equipment.
Scrap metal can be disposed of for free at the transfer stations.
Note: Fridge, freezer, and air-con units are scrap metal, but we need to degas them first. That is why the degassing fee applies.
These appliances contain hydrofluorocarbons and other refrigerant gases, which are highly dangerous to people and the environment. These gases must be dealt with by a professional, so these costs have passed on.
