When do I register my dog?

Central Otago District Council is required by law to keep a register of all dogs in the district. As a dog owner, you are required to ensure your dog is registered by the time it is three months old.

Once your dog is registered, you are also required to re-register each year ( July). A notice and invoice will be sent to the registered owner prior to the registration period as a reminder that the next annual registration is due.

Any dog registered before 19th May will be charged a pro rata amount for 2024-2025 registration year. From 19th May, these dogs must be registered for the 2025-2026 year.

Registration 2025 opens up on 19th May- 

Key dates:

• 31st July - Dog registration payments are due

• 4th August - 50% penalties will be applied

• 1st September - Infringements will be issued for unregistered dogs, $300 per dog

• 27th October - Unpaid infringements go to Court, additional $55 fee for Court lodgement applies.
